Hi all,

I converted my car to 5 studs.

Things I had ''lying'' around
- Alfa romeo 164 Turbo diesel or 3000V6 discs and calipers
- Porsche 928S4 ''enormous brembo calipers and discs
- Rover SD1 front struts
- Fittipaldi wheels (17x9) + michelin pilot 215/40/17

Things I had done at the machineshop
- drilling out the holes in the halfshafts
- skimmed all discs
- machined all the brackets and adapters that I made

I had some secondhand Rover SD1 struts lying around. As you probably know these are almost the same as the tr7/8 item except for the 5 stud pattern and the top mounting of the spring. These are quite easy to convert to a tr7.
You just cut of the top (about 3 inches), take some secondhand tr7/8 struts, cut them in half, and insert the tr7/8 top in the Rover strut. Weld everything together and just put them on the car.

I also made an adapter for the disc and one for the caliper. The reason for this is that I used a 5 bolt pattern for some nice wheels( 17x9inch from alfa 164) and they needed 5 bolts. The other advantage was that the Rover strut uses bigger wheel bearings( the tr7 items are really small !!). The Rover bolt pattern is almost the same as alfa, I just had to drill out the holes.

At the rear it was even easier. Take out the halfshafts, weld up all the holes in the flange (I think this is the right word). Redrill everything to the 5 bolt pattern. The disc fits over the flange, and you just have to make a bracket to mount the caliper.

Mind you, because I used Alfa front discs at the back, I don't have any handbrake. I'm making a hydraulic handbrake system now. I'm driving the car for a week now and the brakes are fantastic. Braking hard from 0 to 100 is more fun than accelerating. The Porsche brakes are very hard to find, but with a little bit of imagination, you can convert almost any system. The problem with the Porsche brakes s that you need 17 inch wheels.

It is also very easy to convert your brakes with alfa 164 discs at the front. You have to keep the 4 stud pattern (you do need larger wheels tough).

If you have more questions, feel free to e-mail.

Greetings,

Lode Crommen.
