Cylinder heads

Application: TR8

Triumph Part #:

Other Part #’s:

Other Vehicles: All Rover V8’s, built after the TR8 went into production.

References: Wedge e-mail list

Comments: Be sure to match the appropriate gasket in order to maintain a similar compression ratio. i.e. composite or metal shim.

Earlier pre Rover SD1/TR8 heads have smaller valves and may not be ready for unleaded petrol.

Later 4.0L heads are skimmed with smaller combustion chambers and 10 head bolts to compensate for the much thicker composite gaskets.

Cylinder head – Gasket

Application: TR8

Triumph Part #:

Other Part #’s:

Other Vehicles: 1961-63 Buick 215, like in a skylark or any Rover V8.

References: Wedge e-mail list

Comments: Early Rovers use thinner metal gasket. The later 4.0L used a thicker composite gasket that was compensated for by skimming the mounting face resulting in smaller combustion chambers. They also only had 10 head bolts.

The Rover 4.0L has very thick composite head gaskets, the TR8 head gaskets are in the middle and the thinnest are the steel shim gaskets available from D&D (note: they use a sealer unlike the composite gaskets).

Rover also sells a 3.5L composite gasket designed for the early heads which is slightly thinner than their later 4.0L composites, but still looses compression ratio to the original steel shim gaskets.

Exhaust – manifold gasket

Application: TR8

Triumph Part #: ERC3606

Other Part #’s: Land Rover ERR6733

Comments: The stock gasket (top picture) was a single port design (8 required). The later replacement gasket (bottom picture) covers two ports (4 required) and is easier to align when refitting the manifolds.

Repair: To repair the oil seal surface on the Harmonic Balancer. “The TR7/Stag has a 1.883" shaft or thereabouts, and that 88179 sleeve ain't gonna fit. What you actually need is a 99189 for this application. It's a little loose, but you use a sleeve retaining adhesive (like Permatex/Loctite green sleeve retainer) to keep it in place” – Wayne Simpson
