When I was more serious about autocrossing (and later road racing) I just cut up a magnetic strip into LED style segments. This way you can make any number any time with very little material. I bought the white stuff and just painted them (Krylon Red in my case). Simple and cheap solution! Today I just use shoe polish on the windshield (small local events, very very small).
