When I had my 85 Golf, I used the smallest motorcycle battery I could get
away with (I felt I needed at least 100 cca), and lazily used it into the
month of January one year. 100% of the time in the car. No problems even
on cold (for Indiana) afternoons after work. On the other hand I've never
been able to use a lawn/garden tractor battery longer than one summer season
on a riding mower. I just don't think they are designed to last more than
4-6 months of use. Of course YMMV.
