Here's another approach I heard from Corvette super shoe, Grant Byers.

He uses magnetic cut-out numbers, stuck to fiberglass with double-stick
carpet tape.

His reasoning is they're relatively indestructible compared to the thin
vinyl.  They stick in rain too.

I don't know if he uses the t-shirt trick to de-tack the car-side adhesive.
