George, go with the 40amp if it is NOT a slow blow.  Can you see the 
metal strip in it?  It should be a plain metal strip.  I don't know 
what the surge current is, but using a fast blow (normal) 30 amp. 
fuse you run the risk if it blowing quite often when the compressor
kicks in.  If you can find a 30A slow blow you could try that.  The
slow blow is designed to withstand the surge current.
