Like Chuck had mentioned, your torque converter probably didn't engage the
pump gears. When you put the torque converter in and rotate it, it will make
two "clunks" (pretty technical term). The first clunk is when the converter
slips into the bushing and hits the pump gears. Rotate the converter again and
it will make a second clunk, that is when it slips into the gears. You will
not be able to put your fingers between the bell housing and the converter
after the second clunk. You should check your flywheel to make sure it wasn't
bent if this was the case.
