Dwell/gap

        One more thing about dwell and point gap---As dwell is increased,
ignition timing is retarded.  As dwell is decreased, timing is advanced.
This means that normal wear on the point rubbing block will: 1)Reduce the
gap; 2)Increase the dwell; and 3) Advance the ignition timing.  Resetting
just the gap should theoretically restore everything to its correct
setting.  Of course, if there is wear developing in the distributor shaft
bushings, or some other unsuspected problem, it could muddy the waters
somewhat.  So the correct sequence should be: 1) Set gap; 2) Check Dwell
and reset gap as necessary; and 3) Check timing with a timing light.
