Daniel,
It's possible the problem is in the ignition switch, but since it keeps
running when the key is returned to the on position the problem may be
in the starter solenoid. If the problem is in the switch I would expect
the starter to oscillate on and off, since the Bendix gear & over-run
clutch will disconnect the starter as soon as the engine flywheel starts
moving faster than the starter (regardless of key position). You
probably would get some gear banging or nashing noises as the starter
pinion crashes into the moving ring gear. You hear this when you try to
start a car that is already running (why would anyone do that?).

If the solenoid is the problem, it is likely a result of contact wear
(the big contacts for the starter motor). Due to arcing these tend to
wear uneven (you're the Physicist you explain it), then the contact disk
can jam and even weld to the contacts preventing the motor from shutting
off. Rebuild kits for the solenoid may be available, I believe it's a
Delco copy. The only other alternative is to replace the starter.
