dist. gasket??

Hello All,
        It appears that one of my oil leaks was coming from the dist.  Where
my old dist. sits on my engine block there is no gasket. Someone tried to 
smear on some permatex but no gasket. Was there ever a gasket there?? What
is the preferred method for sealing this area??
