Fergus,

You are correct. Best to "open up" the front bow, install
a reinforcing piece, and weld it back up.

I think Ross Mullen offers a exchange with this modification.

For those around Austin, I have a nice BIG spot welder. No
time to redo the bow myself, but if you need the spot welds
you're welcome to stop by and use the spot welder.
