Oil Pressure help

The oil pressure drops precariously low (according to the gauge) when I drive
for extended periods at high rpms (4100).  In contrast, when I start it up, it
jumps up to 40 lbs.

The wire from the sensor in the block seems to be intact, no short that I can
detect.  Is my mechanical oil pump not working?  NO clue here, please help!
