Dual Master Cyl Question

Does anyone have a good suggestion for getting the second seal ring on
the small piston in the dual brake master cylinder?

It looks like the easy way would be to remove the spring, but it does
not seem to have a trick to remove it.  There is a keeper punched into
the metal base of the spring, but so far I cannot get it pulled out to
get the whole spring assembly off.
