Regarding plugging the smog ports, it was written:

They're very close. Close enough that with a pipe plug and a wrench
you'll end up retapping the soft aluminum head :-(.
Tom Walter used to make correctly sized- and shaped- plugs, but
he's been way too busy lately to churn out another batch. :-(
