Maserati and their owner, Ferrari paint all their valve covers,
manifolds etc. with wrinkle paint. There are powder coatings somewhat
similar to wrinkle paint but this is not used by Ferrari. One thing to
remember, Ferrari and Maserati only produce a limited number of cars
compared to most other manufacturers in the world. They use small local
companies as subcontractors and I know of the company who paint the
valve covers. Ferrari have their own aluminium casting foundry in the
factory. Some Ferrari owners paint more parts on and around the engine
for a different appearance but usually only the valve covers and intake
(only V12's) are painted from the factory.
Anodizing aluminium is done by dipping parts in chemicals with low
current electricity to make an oxide surface. Similar to cad plating
steel. The longer the part is soaked in the chemicals the deeper the
anodizing goes into the material. The method is possible to reverse.
Anodized aluminium is not electrically conductive (I think that's the
right word for it) Cast aluminium parts usually turns black in the
process. Soft aluminium turns out best in the anodizing process.
