hoses

Hi List, I have hooked up my water hoses in a loop from bottom to top bypassing 
the heater (as I have my heater and interior out) Which way is the valve 
suppose to be turned?. I have the valve turned with the handle to the front or 
left looking down at it. Should I put it aback on the  "H" since I have the 
hoses looped as if it was going through the heater? Remember I have never been
