It's the breather port. Keeps air pressure balanced so hot oil doesn't
try to squirt past the seals.

This part is metal on some (older?) boxes. Intact, there's a little
loose-fitting 'cap' on the end so contaminants can't splash into the
case. If yours looks like a hose will fit onto it, this little cap thingie
is missing.
