Hi Dave,

I had a b68 1600 and the metal had the small round hole for the 4spd.
Somewhere into b69 production they made it larger.

See the Rallye website for photographs of both rubber seals that sit
beneath the shifter plate boot. Dann Bramhall also has a good discussion
and driving impressions to compare.

The power curves are different for these two engines, and the gear ratios
were matched accordingly.

I decided against the swap, realizing the lower gears would feel mismatched
to where the R16's best power developed.

Yes, having 5th on the highway would have been nice, but we have fewer long
cruises to settle in and enjoy what would have felt like "overdrive."

But its a good option if you're running open stretches often and not
interrupted by slower traffic to have to row around.
