     Thanks for the reply chuck.  
     
     The issue now is -how much better is a new 4340 billet crank 
     than a crack checked good original forged crank....

Forgings are much stronger because the grain is oriented in the directions 
you really want.  The material is still purchased to the AMS specs and 
"beaten" to the desired shape.  The reason nobody uses forgings is because 
the forging tooling costs are high....its much cheaper to tell the customer 
that cranks machined from bar stock are stronger than anything else rather 
than pay for the forging dies!! :)
