I haven't taken the time to respond yet, but here's my 2 cents worth.

Since we were allowed to use Carillo rods (1981 I think), I ran basically
the same engine configuration. My cranks were stock, but meticuluously
reground and balanced by an engine builder in Quincy, IL. I used a small
aluminum pulley (design came from Mike Belfer), Carillo rods, and basically
followed the little black Kastner book for the rest of the preparation. My
flywheel was a Tilton, and I used his multiple disk clutch. I used a 7000
RPM red line, and only exceeded it on rare occasions (like when I was
trying to catch Hardy). I never went above 7200. I also pulled the crank
out after 4 race weekends and had it magnafluxed. Using this formula for
15 years, I never had a lower end failure, except one spun rod bearing
which was the result of an oiling problem (my own fault).

Hope this is of help/interest.
