I have had similiar problems in the past.  Most of the time, it turns out to 
be a small piece of gasket material being lodged under the spring loaded ball 
bearing.  In your case, it appears that the spring loaded ball bearing may be 
intermittantly hanging up.  You may have already removed the assembly, and 
looked for material under the ball bearing.  

I have also lost oil pressure by the pin coming out of the top of the drive 
gear and allowing the shaft to jump up out of the oil pump.
