OK Gang,

Seems to be a lot of comment out there about the Factory original aluminum
rear crankshaft oil seal and the dimensions of the tool used to center and
place the seal. This tool is referred to on Page 1.117 of the TR4 Factory
Workshop Manual.

I would like to do a survey much like Jack Drews did several weeks ago for
the modern seal conversion.

So here goes, if you have replaced your seal with a factory type aluminum
scroll seal:

1. Did you use a mandrel cut to factory specs - 2.822 inches to install the
seal?

2. Did you purchase a tool from one of the big three, what is the material
it's manufactured from and what is it's dimension? I have a Moss nylon
tool
at 2.823 inches.

3. Did you make or have made your own tool and what is it's dimension and
material?

4. What was your experience installing the seal and what are the results -
no leaks, some leakage, lots of leakage!!!

5. Is the leakage beyond what you would have expected, desired or had
previous experience with?

6. How many TR 4 cyl engines have you rebuilt with this seal? Did you have
consistent results?

As a faithful reader and dubious contributor to both the 'big' Triumph list
and FOT for almost one year, I am surprised this issue has not come up in
the past. I've owned one of my cars for 20 years (this March 10th) and
hadn't heard this issue in all that time either. Of course, this is the
first time I have rebuilt an engine from scratch.

Thanks to Hardy Prentice for forwarding his experience and use of a seal
tool with a dimension of 2.818 inches.

Keep those cards and letters coming, I will tally the results in a week or
so...

Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Brad
