Nothing like the hazards at the old Westwood circuit in British
Columbia...The deer seemed to be attracted to the exhaust note of Formula
Fords and would wonder out on the track just beyond a slight rise in the
course, invisible to the driver until it was too late...story goes there was
actually a fatal encounter for both the FF driver and the deer.
A special workers station was installed at the rise with red lights
installed to engage if a critter was observed on course. The rise was known
as "Deer's Leap"
They had a TransAm race or two at Westwood and again the story goes...they
used helicopters and M-80's to chase all the critters out of the heavily
wooded infield, yes, lions, bears, deer, elk, etc. An encounter with an
animal at 150mph in a TransAm car would be very unhealthy for both
parties...
Hopefully, I have the facts straight...that was a fun racetrack!
