When I started racing SCCA in the mid 70's I borrowed a truck and trailer
and slept in a pup tent at the track. A memory but not exactly a 'fond' one.
FWIW , Road Atlanta is pure Georgia red clay. When dry you cannot drive a
tent stake into it. When wet it turns to soup and will not hold a stake.
That was the 'old' Road Atlanta. Now it is mostly concrete and asphalt. I
would gladly deal with the red clay if they would put 'The Dip' back . Also
during that era you could count on one of the Whittington brothers P-51
Mustangs buzzing the back straight sometime during the weekend.

That was what it was all about. My experiences racing motorcycles on flat
tracks and motocross were similar--$1500 worth of bike, $600 in tools and
parts, and $100 worth of truck. And I can't say I'm glad those days are
over--what adventures, what drama. We even occasionally chased down a pit
 tootsie. THAT doesn't happen anymore.
