Bill I work in the rubber industry and can say that a properly manufactured
mount with proper steel to rubber bonding will fail in the rubber before the
bond will fail. As a matter of fact there is an adhesion test that looks for
bond failure before the rubber tears. The adhesives are made by Lord Corp
and others and create their bond during the cure cycle of the mount.
My guess is that OE mounts were made properly but the new ones are just not
made with the same level of quality. Also good mounts are made from Natural
Rubber which has the best vibration dampening of all of the various
polymers. Trouble is that it doesn't like oils very much. How many
transmission mounts have we seen which have failed and the rubber is just a
gooey mess. I've seen them where the bond is still good but the rubber has
failed.
I'd be looking around for an aftermarket supplier of industrial vibration
mounts that may have a standard mount that fits the dimensions needed. There
is a company in the Buffalo, NY area ........ Enidine or something like that
which comes to mind. They may have something that would work in place of the
stuff coming from our suppliers. For my street TR4A I keep a stock of good
used ones around in case I need one.
