Depends on how whacky you are. If you go by Carroll Smith's book you
wouldn't use anything but AN bolts for anything more serious than putting a
barbeque together. The bolts that Triumph used are surprisingly good
quality, though they had a nasty habit of placing bolts in single shear and
exposing threads in the shear area. I like to use the best bits I can find
without breaking the bank or waiting three weeks for a shock bolt to show
up. So I use a lot of hardware store "grade eight" which may very well be
counterfeit from Taiwan with all the strength of rebar. But I confine them
to stuff that probably won't kill me if it fails.
