Alternators are high frequency transmitters--it's surprising that anything
electronic works close to them. They have a full wave rectifier that
converts the relatively low frequency sine wave into square DC pulses that
inherently contain  all kinds of frequencies. You can reduce or eliminate
the problem with a big capacitor across the output. Mylar capacitors work
especially well since they are generally high voltage and compact. The
battery also helps damp all the junk frequencies.

I have a new alternator that charges the battery okay but it creates so much
static that it interferes with the electronic ignition and the electronic
tach. Just out of curiosity, what goes wrong with an alternator to cause
that?
