We called on the guy who paints the local stock cars between his usual
insurance work, etc. (big stock car country, here in Wisconsin). I took the
Spitfire to him in stripped-down form and he gave it a nice paint job
(including some door ding and minor dent repair) for about $1,000. He well
understood the concept of doing a nice job with the painting for not a lot of
money. This wasn't a "restoration" and there was no rust repair to be done,
but the job was of a quality I'd be pleased to see on my street car. Next time
I want to paint a street TR, I'm going to tell him it's another race car :-)

Cary,
I've done several resprays in the last several years and I've found this is
what seems to work best for me anyway:
1) strip the paint before taking it to the body shop
2) tell the owner/estimator exactly what you want done
3) make sure you meet with the person doing the work and express again what
is agreed on
4) keep in close contact with the body shop while work is being done
5) get at least an estimate of the cost
6) keep in close contact with the body shop while work is being done (at
least once a week)
7) have a source for any parts you may need to replace
8) keep in close contact with the body shop while work is being done (at
least twice a week)
9) expect the price will be more than what was estimated
10) keep in close contact with the body shop while work is being done (at
least three times a week)
11) be prepared to negotiate the end price sometimes the items you may be
getting charged for were things that may have been caused by the shop it
self
12) keep in close contact with the body shop while work is being done (maybe
every day if necessary) some times your project gets moved to the back
corner to do some more profitable work like insurance claims

I hope this helps you with getting a decent paint job. The shop which
painted my cars was a custom car paint shop and I was very happy with the
results.
