My dad was a true shade tree mechanic - I am not sure what the original
problem was but in the early '60s for some reason he braised one of my
headbolts to the block (the block with matching numbers unfortunately) and
showed me years ago how to carefully modify the headgasket to work around
this "fix". Believe it or not, I was able to drive the car hard thru my
adolescence without blowing gaskets but I am ready to address the problem if
possible.

I recall in a previous string talk of cracked threads requiring block
replacement. I am being advised by a local machine shop that there are
ceramic inserts and new technology to address these issues. He is ready to
mill the bolt off and do his magic. I have to admit he is a small time shop
in the next town over with a population of ~200 here in upstate NY that the
locals use for their hot rods.

I have no idea what we will find under the welds - any ideas. I am slightly
tempted to let sleeping dogs lie as he was able to get 12.5:1 with a milled
head with a little finesse on the bolt hole. I will probably demand only
10.5:1 out of it, but it just doesn't seem right - hoping today's technology
can work miracles. Thoughts???

Anyone know of a miracle worker in the Ithaca area - I am willing to drive.
