Just a data point. Below is a link to a photo of Elliot Forbes-Robinson 
in a GP Spit from Nov. 1980. If I remember right, the event was a 4 hour 
Regional Enduro. You can see that the cage has forward braces from the 
vertical legs of the hoop.
