I was amazed just how much gasoline expands when warmed. In my '76
Spitfire, when I was going on long drives, I had a section of 3/16 copper
tubing bent into a 'J'. I would insert it into the fuel tank inlet to
vent the air space at the top of the tank. On one occasion, my time from
fueling to departure got extended a bit and the car was parked in the
sun. When I was ready to leave, there was a sheet of gasoline cascading
off the boot lid. I'm sure if I had popped the gas cap open, it would
have gushed at least a foot above the inlet. That was probably less than
a 25'F increase.
Never did that again unless I was driving it immediately after fueling.
