Actually leather is a pretty high perfromance seal material. One of the 
perfromance factors that is not mentioned in the chart at the Web Site at 
PSP is the surface speed of the shaft and seal contact. Leather can tolerate 
quite high surface speeds compared to most of the other materials. So 
leather English seals are not just old technology, the material is there for 
a reason!  There are charts that give the surface speed tolerances in some 
older Chicago Rawhide seal catalogues that I have.
