I have welded up several diffs with no problem. I mig in a piece of quarter 
plate between the side gear . I have never preheated and had no problems . 
Just remember to allow clearance for the axles to pass right through the 
side gears or you make have to cut a bit off the end of the axle. How do i 
know!
