Steve,
The shift rail o rings probably need to be replaced. You will
have to remove the gearbox top and remove the grub screws which retain
the shift forks. Be careful as those screws are prone to breaking. I use
a square head socket and extension to make sure I only put a turning
moment on the screw. Since I started using this method about 15 years
ago I haven't broken any screws. WHile your in there I would use a
spring scale and set the detent adjustments per the factory. It really
does make a nicer shifting box.
Make sure to use only Viton orings. Buna N will not tolerate
modern EP gear lube of any kind. This also goes for shaft seals. Most
industrial bearing houses stock nitrile shaft seals and they will
degrade quickly. If you use generic seals make sure to order Viton. This
also accounts for some of the aftermarket seals leaking prematurely.
Some old car parts suppliers know hobbyists expect leaks so they use
whatever industrial seal is a close fit. Also, engine oil seals need to
be Viton to tolerate the heat. Nitrile starts to harden (vulcanize
further) at 180 degrees F.
