APT Instruments (www.gaugeguys.com) will pull your mechanical tach guts an 
install the guts from a Smiths electric tach for roughly $200. It's not 
cheap, but it looks right. I did this on my street car andit seems to work 
okay.

If you want to do it yourself, I think the screws holding the tach face to 
the guts are the same for the big TRs and other British cars that use 
Smiths tachs, so in theory you can pop the needle off, remove the screws 
from the face plate and switch the guts.

But gaugeguys are pretty good, IMHO. I had mine done maybe 5 years ago.
