I did mine that way, but it was quite some time ago. Following Ken G's tip
of reinforcing it by working copper wire through and tying it around the
tube seems to have solved the breakage problem, for me.

Definitely see if you can find the old lead/tin solder instead of the modern
"lead free" stuff. At least in my experience, the "lead free" doesn't work
nearly as well. You may have to resort to using 'electronic' solder, if
your plumbing shop doesn't carry lead/tin.
Degrease and get the screen just as clean as you can. Might even be worth
dipping it in "Tarn-X" or similar, although I just used a Scotch-brite pad.
'Tin' (coat with solder) the screen first, and then merge it with the blob
on the tube.
And if all else fails, new screens are only $25 @ TRF.
