Chris, to help explain the extensions, they are SCCA (Sports Car Club of 
America) designations given to cars for classification for racing.  The 'P' 
is for production, and some cars may have a 'S' for sedans.  The first 
letter is the division of that classification being the 'A' would be the 
highest.  As far as how they got the division, I'm not sure if it was 
assigned according to speed or if the manufacturer lobbied for the class.
I have heard of cars changing classes to be more competitive.
It is not a designation of engine size as some cars with larger engines go 
to a lower class and some cars with smaller engines go to a higher class.
