Oh, god. NOW you've done it. The very definition of hubris. Expect
something mysterious to go wrong in some other part of the car.

With the help of several people, I've got this licked. Fuel pressure
was set
too high (4 psi) for the H6 SUs. I adjusted that to 2.7 psi, installed
leaner
needles and cranked the jets up to 8 flats from where they'd been found
at 19
flats. Very good plug color now, no flat spots, and NO sputtering after
letting off the throttle and getting back on it again. Seat of the
pants
suggests there has been a power gain in the midrange. Soft-mounting the
carbs
does not appear to be necessary. Now to do some acceleration runs to
optimize
ignition timing.

Thanks to all who contributed -- Michael P, Bob K, Tim M, Jim G, Jim E,
Bill
B, Russ M, Irv K, Scott B, Chris, Tony, Kas, and especially Greg Solow,
who
walked me through this off-group.
