Hi Teriann...

Cut the boys some slack. I think you are getting more than a little hairy
chested bravado here. TRIUMPH is famous for its backyard-grass roots racing
efforts, where budget management often requires creative accounting and
outright skullduggery. But when push comes to shove, the racers I've known are
all beholden to their mates and love them to death. They want to see them
happy. Heck, most of the racing they do is done in hopes of getting a,
"WOW!", from their mate.

Late in life, my wife Shirley became obsessed with a new hobby (Quilting).
No where near like racing cost wise, but far from a cheap hobby. She's
completed 42 quilts in less than seven years. She makes several trips to the
quilting shops every week, and when she enters the front door, you can hear
them call out, "She's here! She's here! Release the payroll" As you can
imagine, I have never ever questioned these expenditures. I encouraged her to
get the best equipment she could buy. That actually goes against her
nature, so early on I went with her to make sure she bought what she needed.
It'll take her a century to spend anything close to what I've spent on racing.
And it pleases me no end to see how happy it makes her.

The relationship with your dog you brought up is a good analogy. Most dogs
provide 'unconditional love' for little or no cost. That strikes me as the
perfect personality trait for a racer's (and/or quilter's) mate.
