I was measuring the endplay without the chain sprocket bolted on to the end
of the cam!  With the sprocket bolted on I now have a very nice 0.004 inch.
Thanks to all who replied.  I'm a bit embarrassed in not reading the cutaway
drawing in the manual correctly.
