In reading the EPA proposal I notice they refer to all =
=E2=80=9Ccertified motor vehicles=E2=80=9D. Seeing as how most of our =
race cars were before the era of =E2=80=9Ccertification=E2=80=9D by the =
manufacturers (I think about 1968) I=E2=80=99m reading the proposal as =
not to include our Triumphs, or at least not the majority of them =
racing. Not much help for the later =E2=80=9Ccertified=E2=80=9D cars. =
I did sign the SEMA petition and I urge others to do so.

Glendora, CA -- Jess Tyree, a charter member of the Coca Cola Cavalcade =
of Funny Car Stars, who also founded Tyree Headers, died Feb. 1 after =
battling cancer. He was 80 years old.

Born in Oklahoma, Tyree's family moved to California when he was a =
youngster and by the time he was old enough to own a car, he was street =
racing with the best in the area. After gaining experience and a =

Proposed Regulation Would Shut Down Vehicle Conversions

Washington, DC -- On Monday (Feb. 8), the U.S. Environmental Protection =
Agency (EPA) proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles =
originally designed for on-road use into racecars. Contained within a =
non-related proposed regulation entitled "Greenhouse Gas Emissions and =
Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and =
Vehicles-Phase 2," the regulation would also make the sale of certain =
emission-related parts for use on such vehicles illegal.

The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports =
cars, sedans and hatchbacks commonly converted strictly for use at the =
track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certain modifications to motor =
vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and =
not used on the streets, are not the "motor vehicles" that Congress =
intended to regulate.=20
The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) opposes the regulation =
and met with the EPA to confirm the agency's intentions. The EPA expects =

Richmond, VA -- Lennie Pond, the NASCAR Grand National Rookie of the =
Year in 1973, died Feb. 10 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond at the age =
of 75.

Pond got his start on dirt tracks and asphalt tracks in the 1950s in =
NASCAR's Modified and Late Model Sportsman classes. He was a five-time =
Virginia champion of the Late Model Sportsman class. Pond scored his =
lone Cup victory in the 1978 Talladega 500, and his average speed of =
174.7 mph was the record at the time for a 500-mile race in any racing =
series.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison raced against Pond for decades. =
"Lennie was a tough competitor," Allison said. "And when the race was =
over, if you needed help, Lennie would help you out."

Before he closed out his racing career in 1989, Pond had 234 Cup starts =
with 88 top 10 finishes. He then worked in automotive sales for Heritage =
Chevrolet in Chester, Va.
