I tried a combination of original latch plate and new striker plate without the
packing plate and that worked very nicely so I left well enough alone. The
welded original latch turned out well.If I want the new latch plate, I am sure
I would need the packing plate also for a start.

Ken,
The packing plate goes on the shut face side but they go between the aluminum
door finisher and the shut face pillar I'm pretty sure. If I remember correctly
I used a few choice expletives while getting the proper alignment and fit.

Hope this helps,
