Pretty much my thought after reading the added note about ambient and
coolant temps (which seemed dead normal). Does a rough-and-ready check
of temperature lend credence to the gauge reading? When the dipstick is
pulled, is there any excess smoke or vapor coming from the sump? Engine
have any of that stinky overheated smell to it that it gets when the oil
temps are soaring? And, perhaps, a simple laying on of hands--is the
sump noticeably hotter than the top coolant hose?

The very first problem I see in the diagnosis is the juxtaposition of
great lap times with a mechanical fault. If anything, times ought to be
down, because to heat the oil to that degree that quickly, there must be
a helluva lot of friction, which would, in turn, have to translate to a
loss of power. I'd also expect some drop in oil pressure from those
temperatures, maybe not a lot, but some, and no mention of that.

Without any of those external indicators also present, I'd suspect a
gauge gone goofy. Anyone have an infrared temp gun handy to check the
sump temperature, Chuck?

Cheers.
