question-back firing

Know this has been discussed before,but someone please refresh my 
memory.  Are the carbs too rich or too lean when  the cars backfire or 
pop on deacceleration in particular when going down a hill. 
The car runs good,I just  feel mine  just does a little too much loud 
popping on the deacceleration.
