Park the car in a dark garage with good ventilation (a contradiction, I 
know--maybe do this at night).  Open the bonnet and observe the engine closely 
while revving through the normal RPM range.

My guess is you'll see spark arcing somewhere, most likely on the distributor 
cap.  Replace cap, preferably with genuine Lucas cap.
