Subject: [Healeys] Engine mountings=20

I read the emails regarding the delaminating of these mountings and, allowi=
ng for inflation, even added my tuppence worth. Rather belatedly I decided =
to look at mine as they weren=E2=80=99t new when I bought the car back in =
=E2=80=9996. And, naturally, there is bad news. The RHS (manifold side) mou=
nting is delaminating along its front edge, starting at the top and going a=
bout 20% of the way down. See attached.=20

The other side of that mounting seems fine though it is practically impossi=
ble to see and none of the other rubber bits on either side of the engine a=
re showing any signs of problems. So, it=E2=80=99s only that one section.=
=20

What I propose to do is this:-=20

1) Not panic as this seems to have been a gradual process and there is no a=
pparent reason why this process might speed up. I=E2=80=99m right to think =
that???=20

>>> No reason to panic. I've never heard of a Big Healey engine falling out=
 of its compartment.=20

2) Replace ALL the rubber laminated parts of the mountings.....2 bits on ei=
ther side.=20

>>> OK, but no one has identified a source of 'non-delaminating' mounts, ye=
ts. If you find one please let us know.=20

3) Achieve all of this with minimal disruption ie without removing the carb=
s (Webers) or exhaust manifolds though I concede that the centrerone may ha=
ve to be loosened off. (Stainless big bore 6 branch). Certainly not going t=
o take the engine out. I see myself supporting the engine and even moving i=
t around fractionally with a couple of small trolley jacks.=20

>>> I raised my engine a couple inches a while back to replace the timing c=
over seal (I have a mostly stock BJ8 with SU carbs). I think you can do it,=
too, but not sure how you'll clear the headers on the port side. Make sure=
whatever throttle operating mechanism you have can either bend that much w=
ithout damage, or disconnect it. I put a 2x4 under the pan to raise the eng=
ine with a floor jack and it put a 4" wide dent in the pan. if you come up =
with a better way to raise the engine please let us all know. I took my eng=
ine out a couple months ago and on the engine side the mounts took quite a =
bit of effort to remove (I'd installed them almost 30 years ago and must ha=
ve torqued them with all my might). You might need to 'lever up,' and, hope=
fully, you'll have room.=20

4) Do the LHS (dizzy) side first as it seems to be easier and I=E2=80=99ll =
hopefully learn a thing or two in the process.=20

>>> Sounds prudent.=20

So, how am I doing?=20

a) I presume (ha!) it can be done per 3) above??? Can it?=20

b) Are there any obvious =E2=80=9Cdos and don=E2=80=99ts=E2=80=9D??=20

c) I=E2=80=99m in the UK......are there any of our =E2=80=9Cusual suspects=
=E2=80=9D whose engine mounting rubber is less suspicious than others??=20

d) Anything else I=E2=80=99ve missed?? There usually is!=20

Looking forward to your advice more than to the work involved,=20

Simon=20
