Thanks to all for their responses!  Power to the solenoid produces noise bu=
t no movement, so it will be ignored and both lights wired straight to the =
switch (the owner will never drive the car after dark).  Ah, British engine=
ering=E2=80=A6.

It is a mechanical dip. Rather than having two filaments these only had one=
. To dip the whole reflector unit tilted. This was fitted=C2=A0to the off s=
ide unit with a further contact that switched off the nearside; permanently=
 fixed bulb (lamp). In the 'up' position both headlamps would be on but whe=
n dipped just the offside lamp lit pointed down and the nearside was off
