Saying friction is a little misleading. When one pulls the choke out it
ratchets along a small half-moon dog. This dog is held in place by a spring
ring surrounding this area. To release the choke it is necessary to rotate
the knob about a quarter of a turn where this relieves the pressure on the
dog and moves it to one side thus allowing the choke to be pushed in.

I have seen owners who do not rotate the knob and then try to force the
knob it thus causing damage.
