The 'dimples' are to stop the ball wobbling during flight. Being as the
ball is traveling at it's highest velocity as it leaves the club, the
line of flight, or curve, will be longest with the dimples than without,
'cos straight beats wobbly, (unless spin is applied, or slice.)
obviously the flight distance will be greatest for it's velocity. I did
once wonder if my motorcycle helmet would wobble less at high speed if
it was like a golf ball with dimples. The aerodynamic are that the curve
of the ball will cause lift on the side with the highest air speed and
as air moves around and density changes the dimples break the laminar
flow over the balls skin to promote less lifting or pressure differences
on the surface of the ball so reducing the pull of the air making the
ball change direction. Similar effects are evident, to a degree, on a
flying flag.
The areo industry has looked at these effects of drag over the years and
similar skin treatment has been tried
on the wings and body to reduce drag and improve stability. At present,
small holes in the wing skin through which air escapes is being
evaluated to see if this will reduce laminar air flow drag. However I
don't suggest
you all rush out to the shop and start drillin' holes in everthing!!! As
a point of interest, the Navy was experimenting with a soft rubber skin
on submarine bodies to duplicate the effect seen on a shark/porpoise at
high speed though water where the skin ripples (Like the guys face on
that film about free fall from high altitude.) and reduces drag . So my
personal opinion, for what it's worth, is, a lot of things may increase
speed/power/drag ratios that presently have not been
tried......................
