This has long been  discussed. My take on it is that on the slick salt
surface with one wheel invariably bigger diameter than the other- one of
them is slipping which is bad. Therefore spider gears work best for the
average light car.  It is easy to jack the weight left to right to
accommodate the torque reaction in high gear.  At the drags this was not so
easy with the torque multiplication of first gear-hence the use of spools.
What does anybody else think?
